Applications are now open for the Grade 9 William Winter Scholarship Program for students entering Grade 9 in September 2027. Each year, students from across Staten Island and surrounding areas compete for these prestigious awards, which are open to students currently attending public, parochial, and private schools.
The William Winter Scholarship Program recognizes students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, character, and meaningful involvement in their school community. Scholarships are awarded through a comprehensive selection process that considers examination scores, school transcripts, teacher recommendations, school involvement, and a personal interview.
A Scholarship Based on Achievement
William Winter Scholarships are not based on financial need. Grade 9 recipients receive an award equal to 75% of tuition in the year the scholarship is awarded. That same dollar amount is deducted from tuition each year throughout high school.
Awards are renewed annually, with renewal contingent upon continued academic performance, good citizenship, and contributions to the Staten Island Academy community.
The number of scholarships awarded each year is determined by the selection committee based on the strength and diversity of the applicant pool. Admission to Staten Island Academy is selective, and applying for a scholarship does not guarantee admission.

1. Complete Your Application
Submit the online William Winter Scholarship application by Friday, October 30, 2026.
Applicants should also prepare for the components of the selection process, including academic records, teacher recommendations, and the personal interview.
2. Explore Staten Island Academy
Get to know the Academy, meet community members, and experience the campus for yourself.
Attend a William Winter Scholarship Open House:
- October 8 at 9:30 AM
- October 21 at 7:00 PM

3. Take the William Winter Scholarship Examination
Students must take the William Winter Scholarship Examination (ISEE) on Saturday, November 21, at 9:00 AM.
When registering for the ISEE, enter event code 8J5K9Y7E to select Staten Island Academy as a testing site. The test fee is $170, and students should bring their ISEE registration confirmation on test day.
What Happens After You Apply?
The William Winter Scholarship selection process takes a comprehensive look at each applicant. Examination scores are considered alongside transcripts, teacher recommendations, involvement in the school community, and the personal interview.
Finalists will be notified by mid-January, and Staten Island Academy will announce the 2027 William Winter Scholarship recipients in February 2027.
Because the admission process is highly selective, not every applicant will be offered admission or a scholarship. The Admissions Committee carefully evaluates each applicant to identify students who demonstrate the qualities and potential to thrive at Staten Island Academy.
