Are you considering applying to Staten Island Academy, Staten Island’s only Independent pre–K–12 school? Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply.
1. Tour our campus. See why SIA is a great fit for you! All prospective students and their families are invited to attend an Open House or tour the Academy.
2. Complete an application. Head to our application portal to complete an application for the Academy.
3. Take the entrance exam. All SIA applicants are asked to take an exam to gauge future success at the Academy. Students who are entering Grades 5-11 will complete the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE); students who will be entering Pre-K through Grade 4 will be contacted about an on-campus assessment.
4. Interview with us. Each prospective student will be invited to interview with us to foster a personal relationship and have an opportunity to ask questions or talk about their interests.
5. Have supporting materials ready. SIA seeks well-rounded applicants with a creative spirit. If you have materials, awards, or references that speak to your interests and achievements, we’d love to hear all about them!
The Academy is proud to promote an environment of inclusion and equity. Support and scholarships are available. In 2024, some 30% of our students received financial aid. To ensure you receive the support you’re eligible for:
1. Ask about financial aid. Needs-based financial aid is available. Talk to our admissions team about the support we can extend to you.
2. Apply for the William Winter Scholarship Program. The William Winter Scholarship is a competitive merit award given to students who will be entering Grade 6 or 9. It is not based on financial need.
Are you an international student? International students make up 15% of our Upper School body, and SIA works to ensure that transitioning to life in the U.S. is as seamless as possible. If you’re applying to SIA as an international student, you’ll complete the steps above, and will also:
1. Take a year-long ESL course (if in Grades 8, 9, or 10). This course will help you adapt to the needs of Western academic culture by offering support for academic reading, writing, and study skills.
2. Work with an adviser. An individual adviser will assist you with school transition, accommodations, and more – to ensure that you feel right at home.
