Parental Involvement in Education: Building Strong Partnerships

SIA_Blog_ParentalInvolvementinEducation

Learning doesn’t just happen inside the classroom. Parental involvement with a child’s education is a powerful marker of academic success, social-emotional development, and overall well-being, and it is associated with better grades, attendance, and classroom behavior. At Staten Island Academy, we actively encourage families to get involved in their child’s learning—whether it’s at home, through extracurricular activities, or through gifting. Here are some ways you can support your child’s learning.

Support Learning at Home

One of the most powerful ways to get involved in your child’s education is by actively supporting their learning at home. Create routines that support learning, such as nightly reading or weekend outings to the library or museum, and be available to answer questions about homework or material being covered in class. Model reading and a commitment to learning, and your young learner will carry that with them through life!

Share Your Knowledge and Expertise

SIA is a powerful learning community enriched by the knowledge and expertise of our alumni, parents, grandparents, and more. We invite our community members to come forward to share their interests, stories, and expertise – whether that’s by being a guest speaker, volunteering to help in a classroom, connecting students with your networks, or providing resources and materials to support a learning initiative.

Get Involved However You Can

We know that our community members lead busy, exciting lives, and that time can be in short supply. That’s why Staten Island Academy provides ample opportunities for parents, family members, and alumni to get involved. Perhaps it’s showing up for a sporting match, attending a play or musical performance, volunteering in the classroom, attending coffee meetings and workshops, helping out with a fundraising event, donating supplies, or even just engaging on social media. Every type of support is valued and appreciated. Explore our calendar(opens in new tab) to stay up to date on upcoming events.

Join the Parents’ League

Staten Island Academy is endlessly proud of the Parents’ League, which through the ceaseless efforts of parent volunteers has become instrumental in providing community-building, educational and fundraising opportunities for the Academy. All parents and guardians are welcome to join the league. It’s a great way to support the school while also building strong relationships with other like-minded individuals.

Support the Annual Fund

Our Annual Fund(opens in new tab) gives the Academy the tools we need to fulfill our highest aspirations for every student. Gifts are tax deductible, and help us attract and retain top teachers, provide unrivaled arts programs, and offer an exceptional education at every turn. We invite all members of the community to make the Annual Fund a philanthropic priority and give according to their means – no gift is too small!
