Middle school is a unique and formative time, making it essential to teach, model, and guide students as they grow. Empowering them with leadership opportunities is crucial, and the Middle School Student Government was established to give students a voice in shaping their environment.
Each grade is divided into advisory groups led by a teacher who supports and guides them. These groups elect a representative to serve on the Middle School Government, acting as a voice for their peers. These representatives address student concerns, propose changes, and engage in meaningful discussions about broader ideas. Together, student government members collaborate on important decisions, including organizing Middle School Advisory Clubs, which meet twice per cycle. They strive to offer a variety of options, such as art, flag football, technology, or cheerleading, ensuring that all students can find a club they enjoy.
The student government also plans monthly advisory challenges, fostering cooperation and teamwork among students. Additionally, they spearhead three major service projects each year. In the fall, they address food insecurity by collecting food for Project Hospitality. During winter, they organize a coat drive for those in need. In spring, they host a book stroll, collecting gently used books and setting up a day for the school community to select titles to enjoy. Leftover books are donated to the New Dorp Moravian Church on Staten Island.
The highlight of the year is the Middle School Dance, where student government members play a pivotal role in planning and deciding on the theme, decorations, food, and music. The elected members of the Middle School Student Government at Staten Island Academy are passionate, compassionate, and energetic leaders who make a positive impact on their school community. It’s a privilege to work with these remarkable students each year!
