At Staten Island Academy, we believe that student success happens both within and outside the classroom. One key pillar to that success is athletics participation. We’re proud to be an active learning community where students participate in various sports and movement-based activities, and we see the benefits of this approach throughout our day – and well into our students’ futures.
Read on to learn more about our philosophy regarding the intersection of sports and education and the opportunities that are available to our students.
The Benefits of an Athletics Education
At SIA, we understand that what’s good for the body is good for the mind and is part of a well-rounded education. Participation in sports fosters life-long habits of perseverance, resilience, time management, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Students who play sports are more self-confident, better understand the impact of their efforts in relation to others, and boast stronger relationships. Through sports participation, they’re empowered to test their limits, learn to graciously navigate setbacks or defeats, keep their cool in a high-pressure environment, and work together towards a shared goal. We know this because we see it every day – both on and off the field.
Crucially, student-athletes also learn to balance the competing demands of different areas of their academic lives, building healthy habits that they take with them into adulthood. When students are given opportunities to bond over shared experiences such as training, competing, traveling, or just playing a friendly match, we also see increased pride and belonging – which is vital to the strength of our school community.
Exploring Athletics at SIA
Every student can be an athlete – it’s just a matter of finding their sport (or sports!) At SIA, we offer a variety of athletic opportunities ranging from organized, competitive sports to more casual ways to move and stay fit. Physical education and movement are integrated into our curriculum from the early years through to Senior year, and students can join more than 25 teams from Grades 5-12(opens in new tab), with available sports including soccer, volleyball, softball, baseball, basketball, swimming, and lacrosse.
Students train on campus in dedicated spaces, including the Steinman Fields, used for soccer, baseball, softball, and lacrosse, and the fully equipped OJ Buck Gymnasium, which offers weights, cardio equipment, and a stretching area. Additionally, our Tigers participate in games with fellow SIA students and houses and compete against other schools in the metropolitan area, New York and New Jersey. Many students are multi-sport athletes, participating in more than one sport or activity.
Move the SIA Way: Take a Closer Look at Our Athletics Program!
It’s hard not to be inspired to get involved in sports at Staten Island Academy. Of the twelve acres of our picturesque campus, half are dedicated to athletics fields, three tennis courts, two swimming pools, a playground, and two outdoor patios – giving students ample opportunity to play, compete, and hone their skills. If you’d like to explore our beautiful campus and see the endless athletic opportunities available to our students, we invite you to attend an open house(opens in new tab) or book a tour!
