What Does it Mean to be an Independent School?
An independent school is more than just another term for a private school – although there is some overlap. A “private” or “non-public” school does not receive public funding. While all independent schools are private schools, not all private schools are independent.
Private schools may be funded by an outside entity, such as a non-profit (or for-profit) or religious organization. This organization may shape the approach, mission, and curriculum of a given private school. In contrast, truly independent schools are run by a board of governors or trustees and have their own individual missions(opens in new tab) with strict rules for governance.
